Sicilian folktales offer insight into the power of storytelling and its ability to preserve a rich heritage. These tales highlight the island’s history of occupation and survival and reflect the vision of most nineteenth-century Sicilians. They feature rebellious, comic energy and shockingly brutal endings customary to this culture’s folktale tradition. Initially retold and written in Sicilian, a language less commonly spoken today, it’s important to keep these tales alive.
